How to Build a Patio Living Space That’s Used Year-Round

4 mins read

When designed well, a patio space acts as an additional living room for your home, even during the winter months. It can be a powerful way to get some fresh air, enjoy the summer to its fullest, and enjoy a whole new area of your home that you simply weren’t making use of before.

So if you have a backyard that isn’t being used, or a patio that’s in disrepair, it’s time to reimagine your outdoor space and use this guide to get you started:

Understand The Best Patio Locations and Size

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when designing your backyard is putting the patio in the wrong spot, making it too big, or making it too small. Before you get your hopes up about any size, however, it is essential to check what planning permissions are required. There may be limits you have to work with, and that’s okay; it’s just important to know those limits ahead of time.

In general, however, your patio size will need to be:

GoalApproximate Size
Patio Relaxing for 2 to 3 People6 to 10ft x 8 to 12ft
Patio Dining for 4 to 6 People 10 to 10½ by 10 to 10½ft
Patio Relaxing Around a Fire Pit 15 to 20ft x 15 to 20ft
Patio Cooking and Dining 8 x 10ft minimum

Plan for Shade

You may want the sun, but you must plan for shade, especially if your backyard faces south. Constant sun is hard to sit in for long periods of time, especially if you have no other choice.

The good news is you can be in charge of how much shade you get and when simply by installing a retractable awning for decks. This way, you have the option to sunbathe when you want, and pull the shade forward when you want to cool down, or if it starts to rain.

Other ways to add shade are to install a pergola, which dapples the sunlight, making it better for outdoor dining. You can also use sun shades if you have a tiny balcony or a paver patio.

Plan for the Wind

Another consideration is how you intend to block out the wind. This will be particularly helpful throughout the year. If your patio is in the corner between your house and the fenceline, then you’re already well on your way to blocking out the wind. All that’s left is to install a living border with evergreen bushes to block out more of the wind, making your patio more comfortable year-round.

Plan for Cold

The final tip is to invest in a heater or other heat source for the colder months. A fire pit can be used year-round whenever you want to cozy up and cuddle near an open flame. If fire isn’t for you, then an outdoor heater can make outdoor dining and lounging more comfortable in autumn and spring.

By planning how you can and will enjoy the space year-round, whether by ensuring you have sufficient space or by preparing for every weather eventuality, you can maximize the benefits of your outdoor space. Add in decorations, and you’ll have a wonderful oasis to escape to whenever you need it.
